I'm in a bit of a situation. I know you've probably heard this a thousand times... but... Revlon stopped making the dye that I love. It was in their red hot reds collection and was a nearly black, reddish brown. I've tried a few things since then and can not seem to find anything dark enough. I am actually thinking about going back to black. When I think about it though, I remember all of the problems that go along with it (missing spots, ugly roots, fading, and dullness). I don't know what to do. I want my hair to be as close as I can get it to black, without actually being black... and of course some red would be nice, but if it is just a super dark brown, that would work as well. If black is what I have to do, then I would like a brand that doesn't turn into a dull grey-brown, something that stays shiny (if that is

I use Natural Instincts-not sure how close to black you can get while still being red--I go for the deep red--I know that there are darker shades of it than I use. I like it because it is a semi-permanent and washes out naturally without roots--so it does fade, but stays shiny and nice while it does--and the fading is less noticeable since there are no roots showing.

Drop me a note, girly--haven't heard from you in a while but I know that there have been some big changes in your world. When ya gonna get down to the Bay Area again?

Sorry I'm so late to the game on this one, somehow I missed it! But, if it's any help, I, too, use Natural Instincts in Midnight and, though indeed black, it's a nice soft black and actually does look pretty natural. Assuming you have black eyebrows, of course, which I do. But a friend of mine wore the Egyptan Plum for a long time and it was gorgeous and there is also a, I think, Black Cherry, which sounds an awful lot like the shade you are looking for.

I like to use the Natural Instincts as well. I've tried other stuff, but I like NI because there is no ammonia in it. I'm currently using the Egyptian Plum, which gives a really nice burgandy color. My favorite is Black Cherry, as Alex said, it's probably more of what you're looking for. I have a hard time finding Black Cherry where I live, but the color is beautiful.
